Essentialism

Success holds capable and driven people to the next level. However success breeds more opportunities and options that diffuse its very focus and ironically, success becomes a catalyst for failure. That is according to what Greg McKeown noticed when he had a meeting with a few executives at Silicon Valley. Watch the video above to learn more about Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.

McKeown, the author of the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less teaches us that we can build a platform for effortless execution to do what is essential. For some cases, the problem is not being able to discern what is necessary but it is not having time to discern. That is why we should develop a routine. A routine to need more time to think and process and a routine to saying “no”.

What I learned from this video is that it is not always good to say “YES”. Most of the time when we agree and commit too much, our stress level goes up thus our quality of work goes down. Saying YES to unnecessary commitments can compromise the quality of your work and eventually will lead to failure. Therefore, it is better to focus more on the  essential things to make a valuable contribution.
