Now that we have identified the benefits, the next question would be…

What is Effective Christian Leadership

How Can I Become an Effective Christian Leader?

In this segment of the article we will dig deep on what are the values and characteristics of an effective Christian Leader.

Looking into the Bible and the stories left to us, here are the powerful traits of Effective Christian Leaders:

  1. Lead by example (1 Corinthians 11:1) – A Christian leader must lead by example. In this bible verse, Apostle Paul said: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ,” (1 Corinthians 11:1). One way to encourage others to follow our example is to let our faith be evident in the way we act. Paul’s role as a leader in the first Christian church is a prime biblical illustration of this principle. In every one of his letters, he urges Christians to follow his example and become like Christ.
  1. Show humility and servanthood (John 13:12-17) – Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet is the paradigmatic example of a submissive and humble attitude. To be effective leaders, we must emulate Jesus by putting the needs of others ahead of our own. The humbling example set by Jesus, who “came to serve, not to be served,” and “gave his life as a ransom for many,” is one such example found in the Bible.
  1. Be passionate about sharing the gospel (Matthew 28:19-20) – In order to be an effective Christian leader, one must have a burning desire to spread the gospel. Jesus’ disciples are given the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, which instructs them to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This zeal for spreading the gospel will motivate more people to do the same. In the Bible, we see this in the character of the Apostle Paul, who commits to sharing the gospel and forming new believers no matter the cost.

4. Be a good listener and communicator (James 1:19) – As a leader, you should know the value of good communication. James 1:19 instructs readers to “be quick to listen, slow to speak.” A good leader is attentive, taking the time to hear out and appreciate the ideas and concerns of those around them. In the Bible, we see an example of this in Moses. He was able to effectively lead the Israelites out of Egypt by communicating God’s will to them and they followed.

  1. Be a peacemaker (Matthew 5:9) – In Matthew 5:9, Jesus says “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be children of God.” As a leader, we should strive to promote peace and reconciliation in all our relationships and interactions. An example of this in the Bible is King David, for his diplomacy and ability to reconcile different factions within his kingdom.
  1. Have integrity and honesty (Proverbs 11:3) – Honesty and integrity are essential for any leader. Proverbs 11:3 states, “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” A leader with integrity will be trusted and respected by those they lead. Joseph, a biblical figure known for his honesty and integrity, was promoted to a position of power in Egypt because of these qualities.
  1. Be patient and have self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) – Any effective leader should possess the traits of patience and self-control. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are all described as “fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians 5:22-23. A wise leader is one who is able to keep their emotions in check and act rationally under pressure. In the Bible, we see someone who was able to show this kind of composure and endurance under pressure in the person of Job.

8. Be a servant to others (Mark 10:45) – Jesus came as a servant, and we who would be his followers and leaders are to do likewise. In Mark 10:45, Jesus states that “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” A servant leader puts the needs of others before their own and is willing to make sacrifices for the good of those they lead. Apostle Paul is a biblical example of this type of person because he saw himself as a servant of Christ and was willing to endure persecution and hardship for the sake of the gospel and the people he ministered to.

  1. Be a courageous and bold witness for Christ (Acts 4:29-31) –  It is crucial for a Christian leader to be an outspoken advocate for Christ, spreading the gospel to others despite possible backlash. When the apostles were warned not to speak in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:29-31) they said, “We must obey God rather than human authority.” The apostle Peter is a biblical example of this type of person who was not afraid to preach the gospel and defend his faith at any cost, including imprisonment.
  1. Be a good steward of resources (1 Corinthians 4:2) – Use the resources God has given you wisely for the benefit of those you lead (1 Corinthians 4:2). Joseph in Egypt is a biblical example of this principle at work; he was able to save his people from starvation by using his knowledge and ingenuity.
  1. Be a person of prayer (Colossians 4:2) –  It’s a vital part of being a Christian leader. In Colossians 4:2, it says “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” A leader who spends time with God will be better to follow his or her lead. In the Bible, we find Daniel, a man who was able to lead with wisdom and insight thanks to his regular prayer life.
  1. Lead with love (John 13:34-35) – In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands his followers to “love one another. You are to love one another just as much as I have loved you.” Inspiring and energizing others to follow one’s lead is the hallmark of a leader who leads with love. In the Bible, we see Jesus as an example of a servant leader; his example of selfless service to others has inspired countless people throughout the ages.
